Sauna Sail 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The 2010 Sauna Sail was held over the Queens birthday long weekend (12-14 June) and was well attended by all shapes and sizes of boats!

The only stingray in attendance was "Bounty Hunter" sailed by Mitch Bayliss and James Mare.  The platform belongs to Brett Lienert who generously lent out his platform to the sailor from across the border.  Fitted with Mitch's rig and a spinnaker "Bounty Hunter" looked a million dollars and was set to carve up the Pond.

The Saturday was promising with good winds (gusty of course) and Bounty Hunter found itself in third place in first race!  Unfortunately technical difficulties slowed the boat in the second race, but after much confusion (and subsequent argy bargy from some other sailors.. not to be named) surrounding a shortened course the race was abondoned and the results thrown out!

Sunday was light winds with the Taipans and A-Class cats proving difficult to beat!  Mid fleet finishes in both races was the best the stingray could do!

Monday was a very shift and VERY light wind day.  The highlight was watching Bounty Hunter literally swallow a laser between both hulls at the top mark (at very very low speed).  The laser sailor had to punt himself off the spinnaker pole to get free.  In the end some good light air sailing, a few lucky turns, and some excellent crewing saw the stingray 3rd over the line and 3rd and yardstick.

In the end 3rd place in the Fast Catamaran Division was awarded to Mitch and James!

Also in attendance were a few 'friends of the Stingray',  Jeff Southall from Kingston made the trip for the 3rd time showing great commitment to cat sailing, hopefully next year he can drag some of the South Australian Stingrays with him!
